To Staycation, Or Not To Staycation?

This past Memorial Monday, while boating on the grand ole Mississippi River, I had the opportunity to drop anchor and tie up next to a quaint little (well, not really so little) treasure, The Covington Inn. The Covington Inn is a beautiful water top Bed & Breakfast filled with history, charm, and love. And after having a thorough tour of the now permanent fixation under Saint Paul's river skyline, it got me thinking. Does one really need to venture out of state to embark on an adventurous journey? I think not, and with today's economic market, a staycation vs. a vacation may be exactly what one might need for the soul, and the pocket book.
The Covington Inn not only gained my interest as a future guest, but it made me wonder about how many other staycation opportunities there are available in the great Twin Cities. So naturally, I did some research. Below is a list of my top most interesting local getaways I found in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area. Of course, The Covington Inn sits atop the list!

1. The Covington Inn: http://www.covingtoninn.com/index2.htm
A perfect romantic getaway, great for an anniversary, proposing, or a just a night away from the kids! The inn is located right downtown Saint Paul, anchored at Harriet Island. Not only does the Covington Inn provide front row seats for the Saint Paul Taste of Minnesota fireworks displays, there are hundreds of activities to do both on and off the boat!

2. The Water Street Inn: http://www.waterstreetinn.us/
A truly romantic getaway right on Water Street in downtown Stillwater, MN about 25 minutes east of Saint Paul. The Water Street Inn offers a historical Victorian atmoshpere, just across from the St. Croix River. Spend your days at Charlie's Pub, on a riverboat cruise, or up in a hot air balloon!

3. The Nicollet Island Inn: http://www.nicolletislandinn.com/
A classic favorite of travelers around the world, the Nicollet Island Inn is the perfect place to experience the timeless elegance of Minneapolis. A romantic peaceful atmosphere embodies the inn, yet a crazy polka time is just right around the corner at Nye's Bar. Bike and walking trails adjacent to the island's path, makes the Nicollet Island Inn the perfect place for adventure too!

4. The Water Park of America: http://www.waterparkofamerica.com/
If you are looking to make a splash, forget The Dells. The Water Park of America is the largest indoor water park hotel in America! This retreat would be perfect for not just the little ones, but for kids at heart as well. The park is settled just south of the cities in Bloomington. With lots of playful options, you will surely be entertained, and tuckered out from all your water bound adventures!

5. The W Hotel Minneapolis:

This one is for all the city chic peeps looking for a night of glitz and glam. Perfect for couples or a girls night out, The W Hotel Minneapolis is located right downtown in the historic Foshay Tower. You will feel like you stepped back in time to the 1920's in the Prohibition Bar that crowns the tower. There are many entertainment options in the hotel alone, making the city life just an added bonus. It's totally the bees knees!

These are just some of my favorite places, however there are many more getaway options with in the Twin Cities! I do hope you comment and share your favorites as well. Hopefully I helped some of you that are either tight on money, or just tight on time, find the right local getaway for you. Your next travel adventure is just right outside your own front door. And remember, every staycation needs the company of your favorite lipstick and stilettos!
