<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A couple months ago I <a href="http://www.lipstickandstilettostraveler.com/2013/10/the-ultimate-journey.html">blogged</a> briefly about my introduction to a company called <a href="http://toneitup.com/">Tone It Up</a> (TIU) and how it had connected me to a new life, and ultimately, a new me. Since starting my journey with TIU, I have received countless emails, Facebook messages, and texts from other women inquiring about my experience. I am often asked if I like TIU, what I get out of it, and so on and forth. While I do my best to answer such questions, I have to say, it is about so much more than just a plan.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What attracted me originally to TIU was the community. The community started off as a virtual experience I shared with a friend (aka. <a href="http://www.lipstickandstilettostraveler.com/2013/10/the-ultimate-journey.html">Entrenador</a>). The two of us participated in a challenge called <a href="http://toneitup.com/2013/06/your-bikini-series-grand-prizes-from-contiki-victorias-secret-more/">Bikini Series</a> designed specially by Tone It Up, and featured several sponsors like <a href="http://www.contiki.com/">Contiki Tours</a>, <a href="http://www.victoriassecret.com/">Victoria's Secret</a>, and <a href="http://www.oakley.com/">Oakley</a>. The challenge encouraged people to tweet and post about their morning workouts, healthy meals, and most importantly show virtual support and kindness to their fellow TIU teammates.<br />
<br /></div>

<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At the end of the 8 week challenge, TIU picked <a href="http://toneitup.com/2013/07/bikini-series-winners-announced/">4 teams</a> to win a grand prize trip, sponsored by Contiki. My friend and I ended up<span style="font-family: inherit;"> being one of the 4 teams <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=vCJRQsbWp8M">selected to win</a>, and for our trip, we ended up choosing the <a href="http://www.contiki.com/destinations/latin-america/tours/517-costa-rica-unplugged">Costa Rica Unplugged Contiki Tour</a> (more to come on this later). We were SO THRILLED! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>So many goodies from TIU, Victoria's Secret, and Oakley too!</i></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To express our excitement, of course we tweeted, and in turn were retweeted, receiving so much praise and congrats from the entire TIU community! Then we received a tweet from another winning team, team A&J, telling us they also chose Costa Rica as their destination! </div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Being so happy to hear from another team, we started talking details via twitter, and of course and it wasn't long before team A&J, suggested we all go to Costa Rica together!<br />
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-LtPuaAQhwcI/UspGvKf6u4I/AAAAAAAAA0s/jravysr8LuY/s640/blogger-image-979872432.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-LtPuaAQhwcI/UspGvKf6u4I/AAAAAAAAA0s/jravysr8LuY/s640/blogger-image-979872432.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
OF COURSE, this was a BRILLIANT idea. Immediately, the planning begun. And after a few months of tweets, emails, Facebook messaging, and Instagraming, the time had come to experience Costa Rica!<br />
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Upon meeting in person for the first time, it was like we had known each other for a lifetime<span style="font-family: inherit;">. FINALLY we were together at last!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Pura Vida!</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Though the 4 of us could not have been more different. I mean seriously, it was like the writer of the "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" predicted the future, our future. Only we were all in one country, and there were no pants, just lots of bikinis.<br />
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Although we had no idea what Costa Rica had in store for us, we all knew we were in this adventure together (which I will share more of in a later post). We were all tied together, connected and bonded like we never expected... and with that, we could (and did) conquer all! Our connection to TIU brought us together, made us stronger, more confident. And the craziest part of it all? We met on Twitter... TWITTER. Now, we text nearly everyday, and I can't imagine what my life would be like without team A&J.<br />
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-HXoh3tTgNic/UspbFHUhKWI/AAAAAAAAA1c/EZg6hZ285qs/s640/blogger-image-17313059.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-HXoh3tTgNic/UspbFHUhKWI/AAAAAAAAA1c/EZg6hZ285qs/s640/blogger-image-17313059.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>The beginning of our Costa Rica adventure, and a lifetime of friendship! </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So now when I am asked how do I like Tone It Up, I am often at a loss for words. 'Like' doesn't even begin to describe it. Tone It Up is so much more than what it seems. It is a special community that encourages you to be a better person, friend, woman, a healthier, happier you, a sister, a mentor, a coach, a pillar, an inspiration, and encourages you to share your love. TIU is a lifestyle, a feeling of belonging, a feeling of you can do anything- and when you lose sight of that- someone is always there to remind you.<br />
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AuTqdAXdRfg/UspbGWyPmnI/AAAAAAAAA1k/bhLS5u-eJj8/s640/blogger-image--147532463.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AuTqdAXdRfg/UspbGWyPmnI/AAAAAAAAA1k/bhLS5u-eJj8/s640/blogger-image--147532463.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Getting some post-workout TIU team<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"> </span>LOVE on our <a href="http://toneitup.com/2014/01/love-your-body-series-a-confident-fit-fierce-you/">Love Your Body</a> challenge check in<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">! </span></i></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So do I like Tone It Up? Yes, yes I do. What do I get out of it? Obviously it's a feeling that is hard to explain, though I can say it all starts with the community. And while I may never meet in person majority of the women I tweet and Instagram with daily, I hope they know that t<span style="font-family: inherit;">hey, like team A&J, make an unmeasurable difference in my life. </span><br />

Pura Vida from coffee country! I am kicking off day ten of my trip, sitting poolside relaxing with a big cup of Costa Rican joe. While this trip has had so many amazing moments (which I will share more of later), the constant supply of coffee has been a definite highlight.</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One thing my journey through Costa Rica has taught me is to value time, and my favorite moment of everyday has been my morning coffee break. </div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Whether I am indulging in a fancy cappuccino or a simple cafe con leche, I take a little journey with every sip. A small and relaxing caffeinated trip! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ZuTUyV1Gd4k/UoI7WVyqKZI/AAAAAAAAAsU/26bFejXbMXI/s640/blogger-image-1690898138.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ZuTUyV1Gd4k/UoI7WVyqKZI/AAAAAAAAAsU/26bFejXbMXI/s640/blogger-image-1690898138.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I never expected my morning joe to be such a integral part of my trip, but sometimes you need a new perspective. And perhaps a little cinnamon love! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A dear friend told me a little secret while out at lunch the other day. She shared her desire to add new spice to her morning routine, and to do so she made a simple change... Her coffee cup. She explained that even the most mundane or typical part of your day, can be tweaked ever so slightly to bring new light. Now, she smiles every time she sips on her coffee from her new floral cup.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Granted, my revitalized coffee venture involves a new country with a better view, something much more difficult to duplicate in my kitchen. But perhaps a small Costa Rican token or a new bag of brew will keep my coffee time hot after my return from paradise. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<span style="font-family: inherit;">We all carry extra baggage, and I don't know about you, but I hate paying those pocket-punching extra fees. So when I have a case of the "ineedtobringeverythings", traveling can be<b></b> a pain in my coach-sized seat. </span></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
</div>
<div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"> Even a seasoned traveler encounters packing problems from time to time. Generally, I can pack a suitcase for 7-10 days in about 5 minutes... And still look polished. However, this past week during my Costa Rica travel preparation, I hit a major road block. I found myself unbelievably overwhelmed thinking about what to pack. I couldn't grasp the concept of packing for 15 days in multiple climates, for multiple environments, and for various occasions. I even Googled online packing lists, but that just added fuel to the fire. </span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Suggestions:</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">"Twenty t-shirts"... I own 2! </span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">"Four pairs of tennis shoes"... I own 1! </span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">"Rain ponchos"... But those aren't fashionable!!</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">"Fanny pack"... Um, no. Just, no.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"> I had none of this "recommended" gear. So, my natural reaction? Freak out and pack everything. </span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-IuIzBxlpoDA/UnJ98avWRWI/AAAAAAAAAqw/GWPG5eh4j7g/s640/blogger-image-789866864.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-IuIzBxlpoDA/UnJ98avWRWI/AAAAAAAAAqw/GWPG5eh4j7g/s640/blogger-image-789866864.jpg" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><i> Just travel with my entire wardrobe? Perfect solution! </i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Yes, I pulled out everything, literally EVERYTHING, I deemed excursion appropriate and started from the beginning. And out of all this mess, here is what actually ended up in my suitcase (specifically clothing):</span></div>

<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">YES! I packed ALL of the above. Everything fit perfectly in a medium, easy carry suitcase I borrowed from a fab friend. This adventure was no place for my traditional roller bag. </span></div>

Over the past year (okay, like 14 months), I have been on a blogging hiatus. Sometimes life just puts you on fast-forward without a moment to breathe. So in a stitch effort to sew together all my adventures in the past year, here is a quick highlight reel: I was promoted at work and took on a new travel territory, which you will hear more about later. I continued my gardening and home improvement trends by reworking a few garden beds and demoing part of my basement. I have "inherited" a new annual travel hot spot in Arizona (sun city baby)! And lastly, I seamlessly transitioned from 30 to 31 years young. Other than that, not much has happened... </div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Just kidding. There is actually one major life experience I am leaving out. It is so major, I actually call it "The ULTIMATE JOOOUURNEEEYYYY" (dun-dun-dun). Okay, so it is not scary, but it does deserve a large booming announcer voice, like that heard during Wrestle Mania. Anyways, here is the story...</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At the beginning of 2013, my man and I decided we needed a MAJOR change. We decided to reach out to a friend for some guidance (I secretly call her Sensei). Having a medical background, Sensei took time to educate us and provide suggestions regarding lifestyle and eating habits. She stressed making healthy living a commitment, a part of our longevity, and not just looking at it through "diet" goggles. It was evident, we needed a change, and Sensei gave us a lot of ammo to make it happen (more deets about Sensei and her ammo later).</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Simultaneously, another friend reached out to me. I call her Entrenador. Anyways, Entrenador was always up to something crazily fun, and this time she asked me to join her. Little did I know this would pack that final punch I needed to knock me out of the unhealthy fight with myself.
Entrenador and I started an 8 week journey through a company called Tone It Up (TIU). The owners, <a href="http://instagram.com/karenakatrina">Karena and Katrina</a>, work every hour of the day to motivate and provide guidance through their blog, website, and nutrition plan. However what sets them apart from any other company is not just their ability to inspire and love, but also the community they created for their members! This community can be found in all corners of Social Media, and is especially thriving on <a href="https://twitter.com/ToneItUp">Twitter</a>, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ToneItUp">Facebook</a>, and <a href="http://instagram.com/ToneItUp">Instagram</a>. Through these outlets, Karena and Katrina propose mini seasonal challenges, featuring recipes, workouts, words of encouragement, and of course, check-in hashtags. </div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Anyways... Circling back, last spring Entrenador asked me to join the biggest TIU challenge of all, BIKINI Series (er, I mean <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23bikiniseries&src=typd">#BIKINISeries</a>). With nothing to lose, I said, "why not."
So Entrenador and I went into an 8 week challenge where we checked in at 6am nearly every morning for our "#bootycall" workout (one of the famous TIU hashtags), focused on eating clean healthy meals, did a variety of training from yoga, to spin, to abs, to cardio training, to anything in between. Of course, we took pictures and tweeted EVERYTHING. </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-wx6Pq_pjEoQ/UmiAFWkcKpI/AAAAAAAAApg/1ehkvDnIRyY/s640/blogger-image--1772795256.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-wx6Pq_pjEoQ/UmiAFWkcKpI/AAAAAAAAApg/1ehkvDnIRyY/s640/blogger-image--1772795256.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Look at us go! </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Through the support and encouragement of the TIU community, and my TIU buddy Entrenador, I was able to get active and HAVE FUN doing so. AND as the weeks progressed, our commitment stayed strong.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Spin-Stretch-Spin</i>! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Honestly, we started to ENJOY waking up at 5am to workout. Seeing Entrenador every morning for our #bootycall was the highlight of my day! And thanks to all of the retweets and favorites, our TIU friends (<a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23tiuteam&src=typd">#TIUteam</a>), got in on the action!</div>

I have always enjoyed dabbling in new hobbies, trying new things, and finding new passions. But no matter how strong my desire to learn a new trade may be, it is generally out lived by my short attention span. My craft box loaded with scrapbooking materials, a sewing machine stacked with fabric, and the endless amounts of un-opened cook books can testify to my lack of follow through. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Though I am told I am a highly creative individual, and this is often a strong suit, it can simultaneously be a down fall as well. My big picture mentality with personal ventures can often lead to a massive dose of impatience on my part. So you could imagine my surprise when I found a hobby I not only enjoyed enough to execute, but actually committed myself to!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In short, I have a green thumb. Okay, maybe not a full thumb. Probably more of a nubbie, but nonetheless, my nubbie is a lovely shade of green. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Through my adventure of homeownership over the past year, landscaping has taken a large precedence in my "me time"... And I have loved every minute of it. I find myself researching plants late at night, frequenting nurseries on weekends, and spending my days up to my elbows in dirt. And though I have killed my fair share of greens, I have successfully planted over a hundred leafy and flowered friends. In my mind, it is all worth it, because the end result is absolutely glorious. There is no better summer feeling than kicking back with a blended cocktail and enjoying the fruits of my dirty floral labor. And while I have a long way to go before I hit master gardener level, I know this is one colorful hobby that, like my lipstick, isn't fading away any time soon.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Below are some of my trophies of achievement. In return, I would love to hear your sunny garden tales too! </div>

In March I decided to do "30 Days of Thank Yous" as a spiritual cleansing before I changed decades. My goal was to hand write a thank you note once a day for 30 days before my 30th Birthday. In the middle of my venture, a life changing event occurred in the family of my soulmate. And while I still stuck to my 30 thank yous goal, I made the commitment to myself that this 30 day cleansing would become a classic trend in my life from then on. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During my 30 days, I made a point to thank those I never had before. I thanked some of the parents of people close to me for raising someone who has impacted my life. I thanked some of the people who had supported and loved my mom. I thanked individuals who I rarely crossed paths with at work, but made such a difference in the lives of our students. I thanked community members who work to protect the communities so many of us live and prosper in. I also thanked my Realtor for helping me find my dream home, my insurance company for all their hard work protecting my assets, and my garbage men for constantly dealing with my, well, garbage (they also received a case of beer). The list goes on and on... </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are so many more people I want to thank and show appreciation to for their hard work. Thus, as I said, I decided to make this a part of my weekly reflecting ritual. So now, at some point every week, I slather on a face mask, make a cup of calming tea, and write a thank you note or two. I have found such a release, a new outlook on life, by what others do and how they have directly or indirectly impacted the lives of those around me. And whether you have received, or have yet to receive a thank you of appreciation from me, note your awesomeness is infectious and changes lives.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You look fabulous making a difference. So go out there and own the world in your lipstick and stilettos... Just remember to say thank you. </div>

Each year, we age. We get older. We get saggier. We get wrinklier. We get crazier. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Those major, potentially terrifying, milestone birthdays (the Dirty 30, Lordy 40, Nifty 50, etc) are inevitable. But even though we all know higher numbers will eventually arrive at the party, some of us are still a little surprised when said age knocks on our door. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Personally, I embrace such milestones. I was thrilled to turn 16 and 21 (duh- for obvious reasons), as are most people. However I am just as eager to be starring in (what I perceive to be) the next big hit. In fact, I am crossing off the days until my new year, until my new decade.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
March 6th of 2012 marked the 1st day of my 30 day count down. In 30 days, I will turn 30 years old. I am eager to step into a new "decade", to place a check mark in a new box, and to change out my over-used number 2 candle for a brand-new, unlit number 3. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now don't get me wrong... For the past 9 years and 11 months, I have lived the best 20-something life I could have ever asked for. My 20's were a sea of selfish, stupid, obnoxious, risky, adventurous, careless, wild, dramatic, giggly, short-skirted, lovesick, emotional, hung over messes. Everything was always over-the-top. I was always up for anything. And I never missed a beat. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Outside of being able to be a totally care-free, dumb young adult, my 20's were filled with more triumphs (and tribulations) than I ever could have expected. I received my bachelors and masters degree (in 5 1/2 years- total), I found my ideal career path, I lived on my own for 2 years in a fabulous apartment (most never live sans roommate), I bought my very own house, I discovered the cult world of pageants, I met my dream dog (Lexie), I met my dream man (Dan), I traveled to nearly all 50 states, I found my best friends, though I lost my father, I discovered who would always be there for me and who would always be the most important to me, I learned the importance of purging toxic people from my life, and I discovered the beauty in polishing off lost friendships. Yes, a roller coaster at times, but my vivacious, self-realizing 20's shaped me into the person I am today. So without further a due, I would like to bid a proper farewell to my 20's. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To count down the 30 days before my 30th birthday, I am doing something I call "30 Days of Thank You". I will be thanking and showing my appreciation to those individuals who have not necessarily just impacted my life (directly anyways), but have positively influenced the lives of those I love, or the lives of those in the community around me. The people I reach out to in these 30 days will not just be individuals I love. In fact they most likely will be people I hardly ever see, I have only met briefly, may be aware of but have never met, or may just very well be total strangers. Nonetheless, these people will be receiving a personal, heart-felt note or token from me, <b>without hope or agenda</b>. These individuals deserve to know their efforts have made a difference, their influence has made a difference, and that as a human being, they are truly valued. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the end, some of my appreciation endeavors may be too personal for me to share, however I will make sure to post an update or two about some of the thank yous I experience (or really others experience, if allowed) when all is said and done. So until then, wish me luck on my "30 Days of Thank You" cleansing journey, and to stepping head held high into my lipstick and stilettos filled 30's.</div>

News dominates our daily lives through tv, radio, papers, magazines, the web, and even social media. Everyday our gates are flooded with news stories from around the globe, each one bearing it's own weight of emotion. In a world filled with saddening, heartbreaking, blood-curdling and gut-wrenching stories, sometimes the light-hearted stories are often over looked. In a way, we all are a little bit jaded. I myself have always looked to news stories to not just educate, but to push my understanding and to challenge my own beliefs, regardless of the topic, which often leaves me angry and wrapped around a feeling of helplessness. But until recently, I never really realized exactly how heart felt and warm fuzzy-filled our local news could be. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The other day, Minnesota news came up during a conversation with a few individuals from Milwaukee. The first words out of one person's mouth was, "it's like you all live in a candyland up here". Perplexed by this statement, I asked my friend to elaborate. He continued to say how in Milwaukee the news is filled with riots, shootings, robberies and violent acts nearly every single day. "When I turned on the news here, the biggest topic outside of the state fair, and what was going to be new on-a-stick this year, was the story about a puppy who was taken from a pet store." he stated. He continued to explain that the puppy was brought back right away and the news station was going to follow the little guy's story until he was rightfully purchased by the perfect family. He furthered his recap by telling me the weather man talked for five minutes about a month he made up. A summer-fall combo month, sept-ober, or something to that nature. "It's like a real-life Pleasantville in this city" he added.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I giggled, rolled my eyes, and started to tell him that his recap must be a total exaggeration, but then I stopped. I started reflecting on our local news, recalling the local news I have seen in countless other cities, and realized he was right. Our news is much more peaches n' cream than the news of other cities across the nation. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I started reflecting on all the stories I have heard in recent months and all of them had the same theme, community. Our news shares stories about firemen who prevented neighborhood tragedies, saved lives, and are being honored by those communities with one year anniversary BBQs. Our news covers stories about old wool mills being put back into business and providing people with the opportunity to return to a company that has been such a major part of their town history, and heart. And our news covers stories about festival after festival, the heritage behind each one, and how so many citizens come out to support them and have a jolly good old-fashioned time. Our news truly does focus on the good, the community. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
I couldn't help but smile at this realization. And while we still do have disturbing stories air from time to time, our local news knows just what is most important, us and those around us. Our community. And although most of us do not stick our head in the sand (I like to think we are well aware of what else is going on in the world around us), with so many glasses half empty in the world it is nice to know the one closet to me is half full. <br />
<br />
So from now on when I get home from work, before I kick off my stilettos, I am going to turn on and soak in our community based Minnesota news. Because occasionally, it is okay to have things be just as rosy as my lipstick. In my post college world, I typically see two different types of women. The career woman who wakes up early every morning and heads off to work to kick butt and take names, and the woman who wakes up early every morning to stay at home and wrangle her little rascals single-handed until night fall. Both of these women are equally amazing and hard working, but often sleepless, a little worn down, and in desperate need of some relaxation and “me time”. As women, we have a tendency to serve others before serving ourselves. Whether it be our boss and company, or our children and partner, we are givers by nature and will do so without much in return. Well I am a big advocate for having your cake and eating it too, so I have prepared a pamper list of some of my favorite beauty products on the market. Whether you are looking for brighter skin, a soothing evening routine, or a lip color that won’t wear off when kissing butts or babies, you may find a safe haven in some of these products. Ranging from $10 to $200 investments, each product has its own perks and can meet the demands of any woman’s busy lifestyle. Plus, let us be honest, we all deserve to wait on ourselves, regardless of who else we serve.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My top 10 types of beauty products to own are:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1. Radiant Complexion (without makeup) - Clarisonic Skin Brush, John Master’s Organics Pomegranate Nourishing Facial Oil (USDA Organic). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2. Youthful eyes- Image Skin Care Vital C eye cream, John Master’s Organics eye cream, Avalon Organics Vitamin C eye antioxidant eye cream (all paraben free).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3. Flawless Face- Temptu Air Brush Foundation System, Avalon Organics Vitamin C Renewal Facial Cream.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4. Fabulously flirty lashes- Armani Eyes to Kill, Dior Show, Clinique Lash Doubling Mascara or High Impact Mascara.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
5. Pretty Pucker (go for long lasting lipstick) - MAC Prolong Lipstick, Clinique Long Last Gloss.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
6. Colorfully dramatic peepers- MAC Eye shadow, Color Lab Primer, Armani Eyeliner.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
7. Healthy locks and Scalp- Intelligent Nutrients Leave in Conditioner (USDA Organic), Avalon Organics Tea Tree Scalp Treatment Shampoo and Conditioner, CLEAN Blue Shampoo.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
8. Sun-Kissed Skin- Nature’s Gate Glow Lotion (Best of Beauty Award Winner by Allure, natural sustainable, vegan product), Nature’s Gate Gradual Tan everyday lotion</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
9. Luscious Body- Lush Brand bath indulgences: The Buffy Body Bar, and The Comforter Bath Bomb (vegan).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
10. Lavender Dreams (to relax your skin and body in the evening) - Lavender relaxation tea (The Tea Source Lavender berry or Teavana Lavender Dreams White Tea), Serum: Avalon Organics Lavender Renewal Facial Serum, lotion: Avalon Organics or Garden of Eden’s Lavender & Shea, Temple oils: Badger Peppermint & Lavender Soother (apply to pressure points-wrists, temples, back of neck), lavender candle or Lavender linen spray, eye mask.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Note:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Pick and choose your products based on your individual goals. What works for some, may not work for all. Also, I strongly encourage seeking out samples of those products with a higher price point to give them a test drive first. Lastly, don’t forget to always read labels for skin irritants and harsh chemicals. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Remember, with our over-tasked mutli-tasking lives, it is hard to always put our best face forward. But a rejuvenated you equals a rejuvenated job. Besides, we all deserve the perfect skin to match our lipstick and stilettos.</div>

In a world filled with smart phones, video chat, social media, texting, LOLs, and OMGs our mannerisms and manners are rapidly changing. The idea of etiquette has become a distant thought for both men and women. It wasn’t until I started looking around that I realized our behavior and manners are starting to gap, to separate, especially in women. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When I was a child, my mother always told me, “pretty is as pretty does”. My mother wanted my inner beauty to truly shine through, thus I had the manners of a saint. Well, a young, immature child saint, that is. Proper etiquette outlined every lesson in my childhood. “Please” and “thank you” was a must in my home. I was never to say, “Can I have this ice cream bar?” it was always, “May I have an ice cream bar, please?” I never addressed an adult by anything but, Miss, Mr. or Mrs. ____ (enter last name here). If I was directed by that adult, (say her name is Anne) to “Please, call me Anne.” I was then allowed to call her Miss Anne or Mrs. Anne. In conversation, I was told never to say, “What?” when I did not hear someone say something, but rather say, “Excuse me?”, “Pardon me?” or “I’m sorry?”. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During socialization, I was to always share my toys, and to never be greedy, jealous, or angry of my friends during playtime. If I did act in an unfriendly manner, I was removed from play and had to spend the rest of the time alone (the obvious lesson there was if I did not respect my friends, I would lose them). I was to never demonstrate a feeling of entitlement either. For instance, just because I received a treat after school one day, that did not mean I was going to receive one every day. Just because my friend had a specific toy, did not mean I was to have one as well. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The dinner table was no exception. I had a seated family dinner every night. No TV allowed. When my mother told me dinner was ready and asked me to get my father or sister, I was not to yell down the hall, but physically go get each of them. Once at the table, my napkin was to be on my lap, elbows off the table, legs or ankles crossed, and my utensils by my plate until everyone was seated and served. I was not to talk with my mouth full of food, I was not to shovel my plate clean, and I definitely was not allowed to eat with my hands, unless the meal called for it. I was to stay seated at the table until everyone was finished with their meal. After our dinner time together was over, I was to say, “That was a very lovely dinner, thank you. May I please be excused?” Upon being formally excused, I then of course I carried my plate into the kitchen. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While my mom’s strict lessons regarding my manners and etiquette may seem a little obsessive and over the top, every single one of them has helped to shape me in to the woman I am now. At the time, I was constantly exasperated with her requirements, often saying “pleeeeeaasseeee” with a moan, or “thatwasaverylovelydinnerthankyoumayIbeexcused?” in a hasty mumble. Now however, I am utterly grateful. There isn’t a day that goes by where I do not notice someone declare, “I want”, “I’ll take”, “can I” and “gimme” without “please” or “thank you” anywhere in sight. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Unfortunately etiquette is near dead. Cell phones now sit next to silverware, and when an incoming message pops up, it doesn’t matter who is sitting with you, that text, tweet, or Facebook message has now taken precedence over present company. The smacking of lips, talking with full mouths, and sitting in front of a TV or computers during meal times has become the norm, not to mention the lack of compliments to the chef or waiting for your dinner mates to finish before exiting the table. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, what is most disturbing now days is the sense of entitlement pulsing through our culture. We are surrounded by Jersey Shore and Real Housewives types, where we are slowly learning three kinds of behaviors: 1. If you want it, you deserve it. 2. If you have money to pay for it, you deserve it. 3. If all else fails, scream, yell, swear and bite, and you will get it. This scenario plays out on TV over and over again, and while we all love ourselves a good Snooki-style train wreck, this message is still being absorbed and spread throughout society, and playing out in our personal and professional lives. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Values have shifted. Our manners towards one another have slipped away. Or respect for one another is dwindling. So the question is, how do we regain our practice of proper etiquette and manners towards one another? Simple, by starting to practice it ourselves. We need to pay attention to how we eat. Make a point to have a meaningful conversation. Listen to our tone and how we choose to address individuals. Don’t interrupt or attack someone’s opinion without paying respects first (be especially mindful of this on social media), and pick our battles wisely. Drop the “I want” and “Gimmes”, and keep in mind that just because <i>you</i> worked hard, <i>you</i> have the money, or <i>you</i> just want it doesn’t mean you <i>deserve</i> it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Personally, I am going to make a valiant effort to practice my manners, showing respect to those around me, demonstrating I appreciate their face time (whether it is their actual face or Facebook), have the definition of <i>kind</i> define part of me, and truly be beautiful in my every <i>mind, manner, word and thought</i>. Now when I walk outside in my favorite lipstick and stilettos, I’ll know I’m helping in bridging the gap in lack of societal manners today just by minding my “please” and “thank yous”.</div>

The new year also gives us an opportunity to reflect on the past year, our successful resolutions, and those that were epic fails. Everyone has a different approach to their new years resolutions. Some people aim to get in shape, packing in to gyms for the first three months before falling off the workout wagon. Others choose to de-clutter their lives, only to make room for more clutter later on in the year. And then there are those individuals that focus on eating healthy, but find themselves binge eating McDonalds after starving for weeks on lettuce. <br/><br/>Personally, I view new years resolutions now days to be a bit drab and repetitive, and while getting in shape and eating healthy is a note worthy goal, individuals who wait until the first of the year to take a stab at their new lifestyle are putting a tremendous amount of pressure on themselves. Thus I make my new years resolutions with a little bit of a different mind set. <br/><br/>Last year I decided to make 3 resolutions that were not so typical resolutions just I see how well I could stick to them. <br/>My 2010 resolutions were:<br/>1. To "dress up" or "dress to impress" as often as possible. This does not mean ball gown attire by any means, but rather just looking my best as much as I can. In a time where sweatpants frequent malls and restaurants, I wanted to raise above my velour track suit and at least throw on a pair of skinny jeans and a sweater when running around town. <br/>2. Wear a shade of red lipstick as often as possible, my tribute to the days of Betty Page. I don't know what it is, but there is something to be said about a woman in red lips. Just sliding the eye catching color across your lips is like putting the cherry on top of an ice cream sundae. It's the perfect finishing touch.<br/>3. To attend 1-2 festivals, concerts, and/or cultural events every month. Many of us can get stuck in our Friday night Applebees routines, and while I rarely grace suburban chains, I wanted to have a different experience from my usual social routine at least once a month, if not more.<br/><br/>Yes, these resolutions weren't exactly total body transformations, but each of them were fun and enjoyable, and are all now great habits of mine. It is second nature to dress with the right foot forward, and I have nearly every shade of red lipstick you can imagine. Not to mention, I have seen a multitude of musicals, concerts, performances, and even fashion shows. I believe the start of a new year should start out on a positive note, and if you find yourself dreading your resolution(s), well then that doesn't set a very good tone for the new year, now does it? Exactly.<br/><br/>However, now I know I can stick to new years resolutions, and can start to integrate even more beneficial, yet simple resolutions for 2011. This year I have set 5 resolutions for myself.<br/><br/>My 2011 resolutions are:<br/>1. To simplify and upgrade. Now this resolution is sort of a two-parter. And while I poked fun at the de-clutterers, this is my version of doing the same. Although I will be getting rid of some excess, my main focus is to upgrade. For instance, rather than having all plastic serving platters, replacing them one by one with nice ceramic serving platters. Or instead of 5 so-so little black dresses, just two high-end ones are a better bet. <br/>2. Take my vitamin regimen daily. This one is a bit tricky, and I think 6 days out of 7 will be considered a success, but my goal is to take a healthy dose of vitamins, split between morning and night. So far so good. My secret? Keeping my vitamins in my medicine cabinet and taking them after washing my face morning and night. <br/>3. Volunteer and support my friend's endeavors even more. Granted this is something I already do, but I want to push the envelope even further. <br/>4. Sleep at least 8 hours a day. This is by far going to be the hardest resolution of 2011, but probably the most rewarding. So far I have been sticking to this like glue. It takes a lot of will power, and I know I will miss some nights, but I am truly determined to succeed. In fact, I am already starting to feel the benefits. <br/>5. Treat myself to more spa time. Whether it be a massage, facial, or mani/pedi, everyone needs a little pampering. So about every 4-6 weeks I plan on treating myself to a little me time (this is where Groupon is going to come in handy, I am sure). In between each spa treat, I will indulge more in mini home treatments and keep up my mani/pedi as much as possible. A simple, yet fun resolution! <br/><br/>So regardless what you feel you need to improve, change, or implement this year, just remember to give yourself a little wiggle room and reward yourself with a bit of fun! I know I will be traveling in my lipstick and stilettos through the rest of January all the way to December, with a positive outlook on the new year, and my 2011 resolutions. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3419143974971684358.post-78683749384917275432011-01-03T23:55:00.001-08:002011-01-03T23:57:04.974-08:00Sexy in the Jetsetting CitiesAfter any family-focused, home-cooked, food-filled holiday, most of us are left feeling plumpy and rather round. However there is one place in the Twin Cities that can make me feel sparkling new any time of the year regardless of my self-perceived muffin top.<br/><br/> Most bars in all cities have a unique atmosphere true to those that frequent the establishment. There are your typical dive bars where if you are over dressed you can feel out of place, and receive side-eye stares from veterans. Then there are your typical meat markets where you often unwillingly attract the attention of all kinds of one night Romeos and Paulie wannabes. Well, then there is always a plethora of bars that will love you for the fabulous you that YOU are... you just have to find them! <br/><br/>My personal fave for feeling sexy in the city of Minneapolis is Jetset, a skinny chic modern bar set in the Warehouse district where the men's line is guaranteed to be longer than the women's. At Jetset you can find all kinds of frequent flyers, whether they be tall, short, skinny, full figured, young, mature, fashionable, or classic, everyone of them is there for one reason, to have a fabulous night! <br/><br/>Each time I have had the opportunity to participate in the Jetset scene I knew I was going to have a great evening! Whether I was dancing my socks off, chatting with old friends, making new friends, receiving an endless amount of compliments, or just relaxing and enjoying a house special cosmo on the sidewalk patio, I always had a smile on my face and eventually flew away from Jetset, thinking, "Ah, now THAT was fun!".<br/><br/> It did not matter what happened to me that day, how sexy I did or didn't feel, I always felt like million bucks right upon stepping foot inside Jetset, and the best part is the compliments did not have a hidden after 2am agenda. Regardless of praise though, Jetset allows you to be, well, you! A place where everyone is stoked to dance, party, and have a sky-high good time. <br/><br/>Now this jet may not be the right plane for everyone, but if you are open to having a good time and meeting some really stellar peeps, then prepare for takeoff! Just remember to check your baggage at door, and you may just see me tapping my stilettos on the dance floor! Need a special winter warmer on these chilly nights? Try this recipe: hot chocolate on the couch, mix in a splash of Baileys, then add a little Brittany on the side. Personally nothing warms my heart more than a northern cutie with style during Sorel season! Brittany is wearing a cozy long knit gray boyfriend sweater, a black chiffon ruffle dress, and gray tights. Her teal blue cotton tank adds a little pop and pulls out the color of her eyes, and the vintage silver shoes mirror her sparkling personality! Brit's ability to combine shades of gray and fabric textures enhances her femininity while still keeping her warm. I know I would cuddle on the couch with her any winter night. Wearing my fave Lipstick and Stilettos, of course!<br />

The sun was shining, my little pug Lexie was relatively behaving, and my morning routine stayed magically on schedule. It was as if the world had changed overnight, and it was not until I picked up my phone to read my daily dose of the New York Times that I realized the world <i>HAD</i> changed overnight… well the fashion world, at least.<br />
<br />
Over yonder in California, Google has had a brain baby brewing that would change the face of online shopping forever. This morning, <a href="http://www.Boutiques.com ">Boutiques.com </a>was introduced to fashionistas and shopaholics around the globe. Boutiques.com is a one stop shop for the busy online shopper. The e-commerce site drastically changes the state of online shopping today, and provides its users with a “personal shopper” touch as well as personalizes an otherwise people-less shopping experience. The site can be easily be surfed for a type of item, such as a black pump, or can be used for finding an exact item, such as Stewart Weitzman’s black pumps. In fact this little gem-in-website-disguise provides internet-bound couture cuties with access to designers, blogs, celebrity styles, retailers sites, and the online ‘boutiques’ of fellow fashion lovers. Boutiques.com is the perfect place to go and find that piece you have been tearing stores apart for, or for you to use to crack your creative block and find inspiration.<br />
<br />
How does it work? Well, or course I explored the site already, I have been playing on it nearly all day! First log on to <a href="http://www.boutiques.com ">www.boutiques.com </a>and complete your style profile through the Stylizer. You start off by choosing one of two outfits, several times, in order for the website to grasp your desired style. Then you can select silhouettes of tops, pants, dresses, and shoes you either love or hate. You also can further customize your personal boutique by selecting favorite colors and prints, as well as adding your size guide. One you have completed your profile, you can create your own little fashion safe haven by following your favorite designers, celebrities, and even other fashion friendly pretties just like yourself. However my favorite aspect of Boutiques.com is the comparison shopping. For instance, say I fall in love with a gorgeous Valentino piece that is disgustingly out of my price range, I can either covet what I can’t have or just hover my little arrow to the right of my Valentino masterpiece, and viola! An automatic list of look alikes at all different price points pops up to save the day. Now <i>THAT</i> is my kind of knight in shining armor. <br />
<br />
Personally, I would like to thank Google for finally making an online world for those of us with real world style. Of course there are a few kinks here and there, and I trust Google is working every minute of the day to fix them, so be patient if the site is running a little slow for now, no trendy gal looks good when frazzled by technology and in a rush. I know I am going to take my time, and just love my mini retreats to my boutique, <a href="http://www.boutiques.com/boutique/Lipstick_and_Stilettos?storefront=t.to">http://www.boutiques.com/boutique/Lipstick_and_Stilettos?storefront=t.to</a>, and searching for my next favorite pair of Lipstick and Stilettos.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3419143974971684358.post-58753409850512371452010-11-15T00:28:00.001-08:002010-11-15T00:28:22.545-08:00The Blogging TravelerPersonally I have only a few things I can't live without, my lipstick, my stilettos, and my iPhone. And for those of you that are fellow iPhone junkies you know the importance of having the right types of apps to complete your little hand held world. My iPhone will always boast a Starbucks, Gilt, Facebook, and NYTimes app. However I may have just come across a new potential favorite, and those that are also apple-carrying bloggers on-the-go might be just as stoked as I am about this new discovery.<br/> <br/>The application is called BlogSpace and it is the only app I have come across that not only works with Google's Blogger, but is also free. Of course I downloaded it and had to write a post through it right away. My feedback? So far, so good.<br/><br/> Now if you are an iPhone dependent that also likes to share your adventures via blog, I encourage you to take BlogSpace for a test type. As for me, if this app pans out, who knows what kinds of endeavors I may encounter with my lipstick, my stilettos, and my blog in hand. Some enjoy the light rains and fresh blossoms of spring, and others prefer the scorching hot, bikini-bound days of summer. Then there are those that adore the fiery colors and brisk airs of fall, followed by the snow-filled, fire-roaring, hot chocolate-drinking evenings of old man winter (my personal favorite). Regardless of what your favorite season is though, each has one thing in common, unique fashion specific to that time of year. However the season that truly takes the cake for the most, let’s say, eclectic fashion style is fall. The 3 months of autumn cover from the end of summer to the beginning of winter. During this span there is the kick off of football and hockey, the continuation of baseball, the celebration of Oktober Fest, the start of deer and duck hunting, and the infamous holiday of Halloween. All play a key component in our lovely fall fashion look book. <br />
<br />
For those of you from the grand Twin Cities, I would not be surprised if you have seen a plethora of Twins, Vikings, and Wild apparel. More so, you may have seen your fair share of lederhosen ensembles, legs and beer included, as well as the wide variety of camouflage and blaze orange now sweeping our outer city limits. And of course who could forget the 8,000 zombies that moaned, ate brains, and limped all over the city. However no fall is complete without the biggest fashion experimentation day of all, Halloween. All Hollow’s Eve clears all darkly gothic fashion that Cosmo would normally contest any other month of the year, allows women to be a little more scantily clad without scrutiny, and lets everyone from 2 to 92 pretend to be their very own version of a Disney princess or Twilight romantic, no questions asked. I wonder… if people could get away with dressing the way they do on Halloween every day of the year, would they? I know I would. <br />
<br />
Ah yes, the months of August to November holds a truly random collection of style, all of which is considered mostly socially acceptable, and probably wouldn’t even get a second glance. So whether you favor a gremlin mask or a blaze orange scarf, the fall is your time to strut your weird stuff and flaunt it all. Soon enough we will be dealing with a whole new fashionable season. The spirit of the holidays is knocking on our doors, and sugar plum colors, rich velvets, and sparkling sequins will soon be running rampant well into the New Year. But that is a whole new blog post. Until then, I am proud to be an active member of the Twins Cities fashion fall-ures, costumes, wigs, and all. And of course I’ll never forget my freakiest shade of lipstick.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3419143974971684358.post-9063992871215051862010-06-22T22:54:00.000-07:002010-06-22T23:01:15.060-07:00The Crowd Goes Wild for FashionThis past Saturday, July 19th 2010, I attended the ever-so-famous music festival, Rock the Garden at the Walker Art Center. The event took place at the base of the Minneapolis skyline, adjacent to the Walker's Sculpture Garden, and featured OK Go, Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings, and MGMT. The music was fantastic, energetic, and pulsed through the crowd with the best acoustics. Hardly anyone was able to sit still long enough to drink their Summit beer. But not only did the bands perform a stellar and totally wild show, the festival was attended by some of the Twin Cities most stunning fashionistas! Eye candy worthy clothing and accessories swarmed the garden and the stage, making Rock the Garden my favorite Minneapolis summer event for entertainment and people watching thus far. Luckily The City Pages blog, The Dressing Room, was there to uncover the uber-stylishly dressed! Check out the link below to see their top 14 picks. I myself, am lucky number 13. <br />

This just goes to show that you never know who will be snapping clicks of your attire when you travel to that special music festival or event. So make sure to always sport your favorite lipstick and wear your hot stilettos, or chic summer sandals, with your best dressed-to-impress outfit!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3419143974971684358.post-65517505261960096962010-06-13T01:35:00.000-07:002010-06-13T21:42:24.329-07:00Miami Vice to Miami SpiceIn a recent trip to the sunshine state, I found myself in the land of Botox, implants, and those trying to hold on to their youth. Miami has a lot to offer in a skin tight little package. And this package is not as hard to open as it should be...<br />
<br />
To start, every time I venture out of state, I make it a point to bring back a tangible memory of my travel. I have never been one to collect postcards or shot glasses (I think random shot glasses are unbelievably tacky), so I decided that from every new city I explore I would bring back a unique, yet stylish, article of clothing. Whether it be a hair accessory, a pair of shoes, or an uber cute dress, I generally have never had a problem finding a piece that was classy, yet just as unique as the city, and me. That was until I graced Miami South Beach. Every shop I walked into was covered in rhinestones, giant belt buckles, shiny white shoes, and tiny shreds of clothing. There was not a single non-low-cut and non-backless, bra appropriate, style dress or shirt to be found (though why would there be, everyone's breasts stayed in place, thanks to Dr. So-and-so), or even a simple pair of couture jeans to attract your attention without stabbing you with an excessive amount of studs. I found that every shop, and article of clothing in them, had been hit with a pair of scissors and a high tech bedazzler, hard. It was as if Ed Hardy found himself in a glittery, tie-dye cock fight with the boys from Jersey Shore. Honestly, it was my fashion nightmare come true. <br />
<br />
Now don't get me wrong, outside of the shopping, there are some excellent sites to see, and things to experience in Miami. Including an abundance of fabulous Cuban food (I would suggest Larios on Ocean Drive), and pretty beaches to stroll hand-in-hand on. Also, the architecture is phenomenal. Each building is so full of color and Spanish influence, you hardly notice the rod-iron security fences surrounding every property. However, I personally think the most dynamic attraction in Miami are the people. I have never really been one to sit back and just people watch, I often like to jump in on the action myself, but in Miami, even the strongest personalities can't help but to become wallflowers. The men are seductive, the women are enticing, and any club, restaurant, or bar on Ocean Drive will surely give you enough liquid courage to approach either. And while I never indulged in the Miami Lifestyles of the "wanna be" Rich and Famous myself, I was definitely enamored with the sites I saw from the park benches along the strip. The men strolled down the walkway with shiny shoes and slick hair, women glided by in dominatrix-style stilettos and dresses cut just below their buttocks. It was a parade of backs, chests, and thighs. Everyone acted as if they were the most important person in the city, and I couldn't help but think that luckily Miami is surrounded by water. How else could you drown all that excess ego? After a couple of nights of observing, I realized that while all of the rest of the nation is very familiar with the 2am scramble (or 3am scramble, or 4,5,6am scramble), Miami is not. In Miami no one scrambles, everyone salsas home with the love of their life for the night. And lets be honest, with the way Miami South Beach dresses, no one goes home alone. <br />
<br />
Finally though, after spending nearly 4 days in Miami, and preserving my Midwestern innocence, seeing a lot of sites that made me chuckle, and gag, I finally accomplished my original mission and found myself the perfect classy dress, and dainty little sandals. Now every time I slide on my sandals or slip on my dress, I think of Miami and smile. It was a great place to visit in my simple stilettos and classic lipstick, but neither me, nor my shoes would ever want to live there.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3419143974971684358.post-6043329460264408482010-06-02T00:06:00.000-07:002010-06-02T00:26:45.000-07:00To Staycation, Or Not To Staycation?This past Memorial Monday, while boating on the grand ole Mississippi River, I had the opportunity to drop anchor and tie up next to a quaint little (well, not really so little) treasure, The Covington Inn. The Covington Inn is a beautiful water top Bed & Breakfast filled with history, charm, and love. And after having a thorough tour of the now permanent fixation under Saint Paul's river skyline, it got me thinking. Does one really need to venture out of state to embark on an adventurous journey? I think not, and with today's economic market, a staycation vs. a vacation may be exactly what one might need for the soul, and the pocket book. <br />
The Covington Inn not only gained my interest as a future guest, but it made me wonder about how many other staycation opportunities there are available in the great Twin Cities. So naturally, I did some research. Below is a list of my top most interesting local getaways I found in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area. Of course, The Covington Inn sits atop the list! <br />
<br />
1. The Covington Inn: http://www.covingtoninn.com/index2.htm <br />
A perfect romantic getaway, great for an anniversary, proposing, or a just a night away from the kids! The inn is located right downtown Saint Paul, anchored at Harriet Island. Not only does the Covington Inn provide front row seats for the Saint Paul Taste of Minnesota fireworks displays, there are hundreds of activities to do both on and off the boat!<br />
<br />
2. The Water Street Inn: http://www.waterstreetinn.us/<br />
A truly romantic getaway right on Water Street in downtown Stillwater, MN about 25 minutes east of Saint Paul. The Water Street Inn offers a historical Victorian atmoshpere, just across from the St. Croix River. Spend your days at Charlie's Pub, on a riverboat cruise, or up in a hot air balloon! <br />
<br />
3. The Nicollet Island Inn: http://www.nicolletislandinn.com/<br />
A classic favorite of travelers around the world, the Nicollet Island Inn is the perfect place to experience the timeless elegance of Minneapolis. A romantic peaceful atmosphere embodies the inn, yet a crazy polka time is just right around the corner at Nye's Bar. Bike and walking trails adjacent to the island's path, makes the Nicollet Island Inn the perfect place for adventure too! <br />
<br />
4. The Water Park of America: http://www.waterparkofamerica.com/<br />
If you are looking to make a splash, forget The Dells. The Water Park of America is the largest indoor water park hotel in America! This retreat would be perfect for not just the little ones, but for kids at heart as well. The park is settled just south of the cities in Bloomington. With lots of playful options, you will surely be entertained, and tuckered out from all your water bound adventures! <br />
<br />
5. The W Hotel Minneapolis: <br />
http://www.starwoodhotels.com/whotels/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=3019<br />
This one is for all the city chic peeps looking for a night of glitz and glam. Perfect for couples or a girls night out, The W Hotel Minneapolis is located right downtown in the historic Foshay Tower. You will feel like you stepped back in time to the 1920's in the Prohibition Bar that crowns the tower. There are many entertainment options in the hotel alone, making the city life just an added bonus. It's totally the bees knees! <br />
<br />
These are just some of my favorite places, however there are many more getaway options with in the Twin Cities! I do hope you comment and share your favorites as well. Hopefully I helped some of you that are either tight on money, or just tight on time, find the right local getaway for you. Your next travel adventure is just right outside your own front door. And remember, every staycation needs the company of your favorite lipstick and stilettos!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3419143974971684358.post-36137205925735177552010-05-06T10:59:00.000-07:002010-06-02T00:11:16.369-07:00No Place Like HomeRegardless of where you are from, you probably have your assumptions about the cities of “flyover country”. However, you can’t see it from sky above the Midwest, but underneath the silver belly of your metal bird is my Emerald City, Minneapolis. Sometimes referred to as “The Minne-apple”, Minneapolis is far from mini with a larger than life attitude and the experiences to match. There is a unique level of energy that pulses through Minneapolis, amplifying the special quality of creativity the city embodies.<br />
In Minneapolis I have found people work hard then play hard, myself included. When I finish up my workday, I have a never-ending list of entertainment opportunities. Many are often spotted scoping out the local music. Being one of the hottest scenes in the nation and with 100’s of venues, Minneapolis is always on the tour map from the most underground band to the biggest mainstream artists. However, not everyone is a groupie, so you may want to check out the museums and art galleries. They are extraordinary, among the top nationally recognized in the nation, and feature a wide array of ever-changing international displays.<br />
After you admire the local exhibits or snap a few shots of the Cherry and Spoon in the sculpture garden, there is always the splendid option of enjoying the arts through theater. After all, Minneapolis does have the third largest, and third best, theater market in the U.S. Or perhaps you would rather dine out, enjoying a five star meal from an internationally award-winning Chef? Well take your pick. Minneapolis is one of the “foodiest” cities, and is loaded with top chefs. Whether you are looking for a more healthful organic dish, an eccentric delicacy with atmosphere, or a fatty Juicy Lucy, Minneapolis has all the treats you can desire, so your taste buds will never get bored. <br />
Perhaps you are like me and like to treat yourself in more than one way, like with a day of shopping? Well forget the over-rated, suburban-ized Mall of America, and check out all of the independent, and uber fashion forward, boutiques throughout the city. Can’t find a particular shop? No problem, just stop a person with “DID” on the back of their highlighter yellow shirt. These individuals are Downtown’s concierge service, offering up warm smiles, directions, umbrellas, suggestions, and escorts to citizens and visitors at no cost to you. Now that's what I call “Minnesota Nice”!<br />
Then once your face-stuffing, art-viewing, theater-going, show-stopping, couture-shopping day is over, detoxify your body with a bike ride on a top ten-ranked greenway, or go for a swim under the skyline in one of the city’s dozens of lakes. I don't know if it is the city’s invigorating fresh air, or the streets-so-clean-you-can-eat-off-them, but there is something about Minneapolis that makes me want to experience everything and just live life to the fullest. I guess I have clicked the heals on my ruby red stilettos just the right amount of times, landing on the right yellow brick road leading to the discovery of my Oz, Minneapolis.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3419143974971684358.post-78036145261957775962010-03-03T22:31:00.000-08:002010-12-06T23:03:32.941-08:00My Life in the SkyI am surprised I was not born with wings. I have been on more planes than most people have been in cars, starting before I was even one years old. My father was a fighter pilot for 22 years, thus we moved all the time. Fortunately one of our moves took us to Europe, where we lived our own version of "European Vacation" for about eight years, full-sized conversion van and all. When my dad retired from the Air Force and signed with the belated Northwest Airlines (NWA), we hopped on yet another plane, destination: Minneapolis/Saint Paul. <br /><br/><br /><br/>After getting settled in not only a new home, but a new country entirely, my family and I started to reap the benefits of my father working for NWA, free flights (also known as non-revving). So whether I was going to Texas to visit my grandparents, or Washington DC to conduct research for a class project, I still continued jet setting from one adventure to the next, with the travel bug burrowing deeper inside me.<br /><br/><br /><br/>After college, I landed a traveling job of my own. Living life in a car, bouncing around Northern Minnesota and North Dakota, recruiting for a rather well known Big Ten University was my professional adventure until I moved on to obtain my Master's degree, which led me to where I am today.<br /><br/><br /><br/>I recently was employed as the Creative Services Manager for an international ad school. I traveled around the country to college and career fairs, and gave presentations at traditional undergraduate institutions. Nearly every week I found myself in a wide-variety of cities, anywhere from New York City to Oklahoma City, each one having its own unique characteristics. Naturally, I wanted to experience them all.<br /><br/><br /><br/>Now my goal is to document my travel past, present, and future experiences as much as possible, everything from takeoff to landing, and this is where I have chosen to tell my travel tales. I like to say, some people have jobs, others have hobbies, but there are a few of us that have lifestyles... So follow my life as The Lipstick and Stilettos Traveler as I pucker my lips and click my heels across the nation.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
